Alright, let me tell you about this little project I got myself into. I decided to remake a Patek Philippe Gondolo 4962/200R-001, and it was quite the journey, let me tell you. I’ve always been into watches, and this model just has that special something, you know? It’s got that Art Deco vibe, that timeless elegance – it’s just beautiful.
So, first things first, I had to get a good look at the original. I spent hours, and I mean hours, browsing online. I checked out all these sites looking for that watch. There are a lot of different prices out there.
Then, I dug into what makes this watch tick. It’s called the Gondolo Serata, which sounds fancy, right? This particular model, the 4962/200R-001, is a jewelry watch. It’s got this rose gold case, about 28mm wide, which is pretty standard for a classy piece like this. The strap is this brown thing that complements the gold really well. And the dial, oh man, the dial is something else – it’s brown with this floral pattern and Arabic numerals. Very unique, very stylish.
Once I had a good idea of the design, I started thinking about how to actually make this thing. I’m not a professional watchmaker, so I knew I had to get creative. I thought I could make the watch by myself, so I began to search for some materials that could be used at home.
The first step was the case. I found some rose gold-like material, it looks just like the real deal. The most difficult part was getting the shape right. The Gondolo has this distinct “form” shape, kind of rectangular but with curves. I managed to mold it after a few tries. It wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough for me.
Next up was the dial. I couldn’t replicate the floral pattern exactly, but I found a similar design online and printed it on a high-quality paper. It looked surprisingly good! I used some tiny, makeshift tools to cut out the numerals and stick them on. It was a delicate process, but I got there in the end. I’ve got to say that this step was challenging because I had to be very careful.
For the strap, I found a nice piece of brown leather that had a similar texture to the original. I cut it to size and attached it to the case. It felt really good to see the watch coming together.
Putting it all together was the most satisfying part. Seeing the watch assembled, it felt like I had accomplished something big. Sure, it wasn’t a genuine Patek Philippe, but it was my version of it, and I was proud of what I had created. I really made it by myself and it felt very different from what I bought online.
This project was a lot of fun. It was challenging, frustrating at times, but ultimately very rewarding. I learned a lot about watches, and about my own capabilities. Plus, now I have a pretty cool watch to show off, even if it’s just a homemade version. It’s a conversation starter, that’s for sure! And who knows, maybe this will inspire me to take on another project. Maybe something even more complicated next time. We’ll see!
