Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Remake: Is the 5738R Classic Style Worth It?

Okay, so today I wanted to try something a little bit different. I’ve always been a huge fan of classic watch designs, and the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738R has always caught my eye. It’s just so elegant and timeless. So, I thought, why not try to recreate it? Not an exact replica, mind you, but something that captures that same classic vibe.

First things first, I needed to gather some materials. I didn’t want to use anything too fancy or expensive, since this was just a fun project. I found an old watch case that had a similar oval shape, which was a good starting point. For the dial, I decided to go with a simple, clean design. I found a piece of thin metal sheet and cut it to fit the case. Then I painted it with a deep blue enamel paint, to get that rich color that the Golden Ellipse is known for.

Next up were the hands and hour markers. I wanted to keep them simple and elegant, just like the original. I found some thin metal strips and carefully shaped them into the classic hands. For the hour markers, I used small, gold-colored beads that I found at a craft store. They weren’t exactly the same as the original, but they gave the dial a nice, subtle sparkle.

  • Gather materials: old watch case, thin metal sheet, enamel paint, metal strips, gold-colored beads.
  • Prepare the dial: cut the metal sheet, paint it blue.
  • Make the hands and markers: shape metal strips into hands, use beads for markers.

Putting it all together was a bit tricky. I used a strong adhesive to attach the dial to the case. Then, I carefully placed the hands and hour markers onto the dial. It took a few tries to get everything aligned just right, but I was really happy with how it was turning out.

For the strap, I wanted something that would complement the classic look of the watch. I found a simple, black leather strap that I thought would work well. I attached it to the case, and voila! My homemade Golden Ellipse-inspired watch was complete.

It’s definitely not a perfect replica, and it’s certainly not worth anything close to the real deal. But I had a lot of fun making it, and I think it captures the essence of the original design pretty well. It’s a fun little project that anyone can try, even if you’re not a watchmaker. And it’s a great way to show off your own personal style and creativity. The process was therapeutic too, I love doing these small projects on weekends, it brings me so much joy!

What I Learned

  • Patience is key: These small parts are a pain.
  • Not as easy as it looks: Getting everything aligned perfectly can be a real challenge.
  • It’s all about the details: Little things make a huge difference.

In the end, I am happy I did it. Hope you guys like it as well.
